This work features folded paper fortune tellers – cootie catchers, chatterboxes, whirlybirds or paku-paku – hand folded paper objects used by children to predict the future. A hopeful vision of the future is placed in this object; as humanity has for so long assumed its continued good fortune and permanence.
The gentle, meditative kaleidoscopic loop slowly crushes the paper structures, establishing a contrast with the severity of social and environmental realities today.
The work aims to pitch alternative narratives through image worlds to seek out some of the deepest possibilities and consequences of human construction and destruction.
